The Assignment :
- Read an entire issue of your periodical. I recommend looking through
several issues before deciding on one. That way you can look for an
issue that particularly interests you.
- Connect what's going on in your periodical to specific aspects of
the Woman Question and/or feminism that we have been discussing throughout
the semester in class. Be sure to look at the fiction, non-fiction,
and advisements of the periodical for these connections.
- Focus in one particular issue, idea, and/or problem.
- Get at least three outside sources on the subject (we will go over
how to find these sources in class). I highly recommend checking out
the Victoria Research Web's VanArsdel
Guide to Periodical Research. Refer to the UF
Library Research Suggestions page for help with doing research in
the UF library and its databases.
- Construct your own argument about how your periodical participates
in the discourse(s) of that particular issue, idea, and/or problem.
The Paper:
- Write a 10 page paper (in MLA format) explaining and justifying your
argument.
- This paper should include quotations from your three outside secondary
sources as support for your argument. Secondary sources are articles
or books where scholars in our own time are writing about the Victorians.
So basically, if it was written in the 1800's then it's NOT a secondary
source (it's a primary source). Your texts and course packet do NOT
count as outside sources.
- This paper is your final project, and thus will be worth 40% of your
grade
- Papers are due on Friday, December 9th to my mailbox
(4301 Turlington) by 4 p.m.
The Periodicals:
Below is the list of periodicals that you may choose from for your presentations
and papers. I will pass around a sign-up sheet soon so people can begin
working.

Description: 3 v. : ill. ; 23 cm.
Frequency: Monthly
Publishing history: Vol. 7, no. 2 (Feb. 1834)-v. 9, no. 12 (Dec. 1836).

Series: American periodical series: 1800-1850 ; 421.
Notes: Founded by public leader Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale, this magazine
was the first women's periodical to survive more than five years.
The editor's favorite cause was female education, which she emphasized
in every issue. Despite this underlying theme most fiction and poetry
was very sentimental. Mrs. Hale felt the magazine should not be exclusively
devoted to "female literature" and included reviews of books
and short stories, music, biographies and many articles on phrenology.
Starting with the fourth volume a fashion plate and a piece of music
were included in most issues. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Series: American periodical series: 1800-1850 ; 862-865.
Alternate title: Godey's lady's book, and ladies' American magazine
Notes: Godey's Magazine, begun by Louis A. Godey, was by far the
most popular women's periodical of its day. Achieving a circulation
of 150,000 before the war, it was anxiously awaited by its many
fans, who read and re-read the sentimental stories and poems, studied
and copied the fashions, and even cut out and framed the engravings.
Notes: The key to its success was the section of fashion plates,
which were hand-colored by more than 100 women employed by Godey.
In 1837, Godey bought Mrs. Sarah Hale's Ladies' Magazine and obtained
Mrs. Hale as editor; this marked tha beginning of the magazine's
best literary period. In the years between 1837 and 1850 all the
popular writers of the time appeared in its pages; Notes: contributors
included Emerson, Longfellow, Holmes, Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher
Stowe, and Edgar Allan Poe, in addition to tales and poetry, contents
included light essays, biography, sketches, humor, book reviews,
recipes, and articles on music, art, fashions, health, and beauty.
Sentiment was abundant, and politics were excluded, but much on
the education of women appeared. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
